Presenters: Dr. Sarah Burns and Dr. Eileen Barrett


Originally from Northern California, Sarah Burns now calls New Mexico home. She attended the University of California, San Diego and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology. She then attended Georgetown University and obtained a Master of Science degree in Physiology. She attended medical school at Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico and joined the Division of Hospital Medicine in 2016. During her time at UNM, she has been involved in medical education and interdepartmental initiatives to improve patient care. She is the Division of Hospital Medicine Director for Consult Medicine and directs a resident rotation in Consult Medicine. She has helped lead an interdisciplinary geriatric hip fracture co-management service initiative with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. She completed a two year Medical Educator Scholars Program through UNM and developed, implemented, and currently co-directs a medical student elective transition to residency rotation entitled Internal Medicine Boot Camp. She has served as a chapter leader for the New Mexico Chapter of SHM since 2017 and currently is the NM SHM Chapter President. ​


Eileen BarrettEileen Barrett, MD, MPH is an internal medicine hospitalist and Director of Continuing Medical Education at the University of New Mexico.  She is a multi-state District Chair of the New Mexico Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine. She is also an elected member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, received a 2019 Exceptional Mentor Award from the American Medical Women’s Association, and received a 2021 Award of Excellence from the Society of Hospital Medicine in Humanitarian Services.
